Well-done, good and faithful servant

ds-3196Today, we lost a servant leader. Rev. Gerphas Oure, District Superintendent of the Kenya Central District, fell asleep in Jesus after a several month battle with cancer.

I first met Gerphas when he was a student in my 2011 course, “Contempory Theological Trends.” I remember his ready smile and his hard work, suffering with the rest of his classmates under my tough daily quizzes. He was the kind of person who would literally give you the shirt off his back. When I traveled to the DRC on short notice, he offered me one of his own clerical collared shirts. As promised, being in uniform helped get me more quickly through border checkpoints. Upon my return to Nairobi, we went together to the custom shop where he’d had his clerical shirts made and helped me get some tailored for myself.

At the District Assembly a few weeks ago, I was honored to pray for our D.S. and many gathered around to lay hands on him. We prayed in faith for his healing. God had other plans. But we don’t mourn as those who have no hope! I know we’ll see Gerphas again some day when he’ll have a new body but the same old gentle smile.

Well-done, good and faithful servant! Enter into the joy of your Lord.

Please remember his wife, Everlyn, and their children in prayer, that God would bring comfort during these days of sadness and loss.
